Nymphaea mexicana is aquatic rhizomatous perennial herb, sometimes with stolons, as well. The leaves grow from the rhizome on long petioles. Most of them float on the surface of the water.
Flowers are floating or emersed, 6-11 cm in diameter, opening and closing diurnally, only sepals and outermost petals in distinct whorls of 4.
Best grown in moist, acidic, humusy soils in part shade to full shade. Plants may be grown from seed, but will not flower for 4-5 years. Quicker and better results are obtained from planting corms which are sold by many bulb suppliers and nurseries. In addition, offsets from mature plants may be harvested and planted.

Plant lily bulbs in autumn. Note: Lilies do not thrive in Zones 9 to 10 without a period of refrigeration; they need a cold, dormant period. Select a site with soil that drains well. How can you tell? After a good rain, find a spot that is the first to dry out.Water trapped beneath the scales may rot the bulb, so a well-drained site is essential.
